No, being truly rich in this life is all about focusing on making a difference in the lives of others. When you do this, the results you will experience in your own life will be amazing.

What is wrong with wanting to be rich?
You could sum up the real problem with trying to get rich with two words: wrong FOCUS.

If your main pursuit in life was to earn money (or riches), then your main focus by default would be a desire for:

• Money
• Material things
• Luxuries

In short, you would end up focusing mostly on THINGS. (in contrast to those valuable riches that money cannot buy).

This may not be your intention, but it is a reality that if earning money was your driving motive in life, then material things will subtly become more important to you than anything else. Your main FOCUS would end up being the accumulation of money and material things.

Note again, the key word is FOCUS.

Your inner motive will always become your dominant driving force:
Here is something to think about – I am not suggesting that if you are bent on getting rich, you would spend your days consciously thinking – “money, money, money, money”. No, your focus on material things MAY even be unconscious.

What I am suggesting is that when your MOTIVE for building a business or a career is to earn money, then your main focus will be money.

The driving force in your life would be the desire for money. Consequently when you are faced with a choice between losing profits or losing value in the lives of others, it would be harder to let go of the profits.

• Look for ways to leave this world a better place than it was when you found it.

When you are doing this, you cannot help but be rich yourself also (yes even rich in the sense of earning huge income). Why? One of the laws of the world we live in is the law of sowing and reaping.

When you sow riches into the lives of others, you cannot help but reap them in your own life also. I added two excellent books to today’s resources below that will help open your eyes even more to this great key to real riches in life.

Of course there are many folk in this world who are born into poverty (as WD Favour was). But does that mean that this is their destiny? What keeps them there? Could it be their mindset? I believe so.

The poverty mindset is also found in the so called “Western Nations”, except that the outward evidence is not as severe as it is in countries like Africa. But nevertheless the same basic root is at work.

As Pastor WD Favour states in his blog post “The Cure For Poverty is Not Money”, in fact as he also comments in his post, “it is beyond money”. I wholeheartedly agree!

I am sure you have heard the saying “If you give a man a fish today, he will need more fish tomorrow, if you teach a man to fish today he can catch his own tomorrow”.

Well that may not be the actual quote, but its the general idea.

So how do we teach people in poverty to fish?

First we need to teach them to change their way of thinking.

Instead of focusing on things like:

• I cannot see my way out of this, so I have to learn to cope.
  
  
• What will I do tomorrow?
  
  

Focus on:

• There IS a better way than this, and with God’s help I will find it!
  
  
• I was born to conquer, not to cope.
  
  
• I believe God can give me the ideas I need to do something to leverage my way to a better life.
  

I believe that poverty is passed on from generation to generation when a negative and “poor me” mindset is cultivated. In the same way riches can be passed from generation to generation when the mindsets that are taught by example in the home are positive and of the “you can do it” nature.
