His mother was standing behind the curtain on the side, her hands clasped together in nervousness as Shaheen walked to greet his audience and the judges.

Simon (one of the judges) asked Shaheen what he was going to sing. Simon’s expression was one of great doubt when Shaheen responded.

“Ok, good luck” was Simon’s short tart response.

Shaheen did not seem to notice the negative response and started into his favorite song with great enthusiasm.

The music began and the audience was with him as he started to sing, but Simon was not as enthusiastic.

Seconds later Simon beckoned for the music to stop.

“Ok,” he said, “You’ve got this really wrong.”

Shaheen was of course a little taken back as the audience gasped. It certainly did not look like this would be his night of success. But he kept his confidence.

“What do you sing apart from that?: he was asked by Simon.
“Who’s Loving You by Micheal Jackson”.
“You want to give that a go?”
“Ok.”

His mother and friends were ringing their hands and covering their faces. The other two judges were also looking rather despairing. Now what would happen?

• How would you react to such an interruption?
• Would you be knocked off balance into discouragement?
• Would you give up and decide that perhaps success is not for you after all?
• Would you keep your confidence and continue on to pursue your goal of success?

I was absolutely thrilled to see 12 year old Shaheen take this interruption in his stride and continue with the next song with great confidence.

How could he be so confident when things looked so bleak?

• He was focused on success.
• He wanted to be a star and nothing was going to stop him.
• His was focus on his goal of success gave him the confidence to jump over the immediate hindrance, despite the initial impact of the confrontation.

How do YOU handle the interruptions and hindrances to your pursuit of success?

As Shaheen finished his song there was a standing ovation. All of the audience AND all three of the judges were on their feet!

Then Simon made an outstanding comment.

“This is how one song can change your life. This may be the start of something special for you young man”.

Simon’s brilliant expertise in being able to uncover talent showed up in this session! The expression on his face in the photo above shows he was expecting success from the second song.

Wow – here are some lessons for you and me!

• What would have happened if Shaheen did not believe in his dream enough to push through that terrible moment of pending defeat? How much do YOU believe in your dream?
• He could have lost his dream. Don’t let go of your dream!
• He would have lost the victory. Go after that victory!

You may be one song away, one product away, one new blog post, article or sales call. You may need to simply change one little detail and your whole life could change.

But how will you know what little detail you may need to change?

• Believe in yourself.
• Believe in your dream.
• Maintain that courage, focus and determination and you will attract your success.
• You will attract the right person at the right time who will tell you the right little detail you need to tweak and suddenly you find yourself breaking through to success!

When Susan first appeared on stage, Simon Cowell asked her “What’s the dream?” With her broad Scottish brogue Susan replied “I am trying to be a professional singer.”

Eyes rolled and those looks that need no words were caught on camera. Susan certainly did not look like a professional singer.

And why has it not worked out? she was asked by Simon Cowell. “Because I have not been given the chance before but here’s hoping it will change.” was the reply. “Ok, and who would would you like to be as successful as?” Susan did not even have to think to respond to that one “Elaine Paige.”

There were giggles across the audience after that declaration!

Then when asked what she was going to sing, she replied “I’m going to sing I Dreamed the Dream from Les Miserables”.

The camera caught Piers Morgan with a jeering smirk on his face as well as the compassionate and questioning looks of the other two judges, Amanda and Simon.

Then the music background began and Susan opened her mouth. Within seconds those jeering laughs turned to laughs of amazement and clapping. The audience went wild!

Piers Morgan was the first to comment after the song was finished. He said that everyone was laughing when she shared her dream, but then added “no one is laughing now”. He also admitted that he was reeling from shock.

His vote? “The biggest yes I have ever given” he said.

Amanda continued the comments by admitting that everybody was being very cynical and this was the biggest wakeup call ever and continued by saying “it was a complete privilege listening to that”.

The judges reactions now showed thrill, amazement and delight.

Susan Doyle demonstrated to the world that you CAN reach your dream as she sang her well chosen song: I Dream a Dream from Los Miserables.

Whether Susan wins the contest or not matters not. She is now famous and contracts have already been offered her. It is announced she will be singing at the next Olympics. The video on youtube has close to 4,300,000 views as of April 19th, 2009, (just over a week). Overnight success!

So what was the lesson the world learned? Really we learned two major lessons!

1. Don’t judge a book by its cover! and
2. Don’t ever give up your dream no matter how impossible it may seem!

Are you going after your dream? Don’t ever give up!

Believe in yourself and keep believing in yourself and eventually the world will catch up with you.
